So the real question I know you are asking yourself is, “Can I accomplish all this in thirty seconds? Can I really make a connection?” The answer is yes, you can, and you will. Let’s discuss some approaches for helping you succeed.

I mentioned earlier that making a connection can happen in a variety of different ways. Through this process, you want to learn about the person and show that you have a genuine interest in him or her. If you make that effort, the interviewer will most likely extend to you the same courtesy. You want to identify things you have in common with the other person—that provides the basis for your connection. For the purposes of our discussion, let’s look at two broad categories of connection-making possibilities: personal (non work) and work related.
